Want to do something with your time that is fun and adds value to your community? Have you considered joining the Upperthong Village Hall committee?
We know…joining a committee sounds like it is something for stuffy councillors, officious twerps and people who like to hear the sound of their own voices. The reality, however, is anything of the sort. The current committee are all local residents who enjoy having a good joke and a laugh. And they all share a love of Upperthong and want to do something to give back.
We always welcome new members and all we ask is that people help out when they can, to ensure that events like the Big Thong Ender, Christmas Carol singing continue to thrive. Due to work commitments and joining other community projects the committee has reduced in number in the past 6 months. There is a real fear that if numbers drop even further events like the Big Thong Ender will be under threat.
Upperthong is one of the very few villages in the area that has such a proactive Village Hall committee. Which offers a varied calendar of events and is at the heart of your village. Think of all the events that you and your family have attended over the years and the enjoyment you have had.
Now is the time to invest a little of your time and effort to help keep Upperthong Village special.
Look how beautiful your village is. Come and make it fun too !! Come and join us at the AGM.
Annual General Meeting Wednesday 15th October 8pm.
Join us at Upperthong Village Hall on Saturday 11th October. Local singers Rob Knight and Naomi Ackroyd will be putting on a show like no other. Tickets are £5 on the night or by calling 01484 682500. Show starts at 8.30 but doors are open at 7.30ish for those looking to grab an early drink.
See you there.
Another year, another awesome Sunday at the Big Thong Ender. It looks like the weather was going to put a dampener on things but the sun burned through in the morning and it was glorious. Even the wind managed to remain calm for the day. For once everyone went home with their gazebos intact rather than a jumble of modern, metal sculptures !!
The Spitfire fly over turned out to be utterly fantastic as it was also joined by a Hurricane as wingman. Both planes performed 3 flyovers with their engines roaring across the valley. It came a little late for the main festivities, but we also had an impromptu visit from 9 or 10 Red Arrows who flew over in 2 flying V formations.
Many thanks to all the stalls this year. There was very good variety and attracted lots of attention from the punters.
The food was cracking again this year with pancakes, burgers, hot beef barms (these were unbelievably good) and sandwiches. I went home with a very full belly !!
The bouncy castle and the inflatables were a big hit again this year with both the kids and the parents – who wanted a 10 minute break from the kids!! Sure to be back next year.
The Welly Wanging World Championships went without a hitch with Adam Taylor retaining the Men’s title for the 2nd year in a row. That’s 3 all together for him now !
There was far too much to mention but suffice to say – if you missed it then you missed the best Sunday in recent memory. See you all next year.
Check out the pictures….
Men – Adam Taylor
Is anyone going to stop Adam? Many stepped up to topple Adam off the top spot but all failed. Near perfect conditions helped Adam to throw the winning welly over 15ft further than his nearest challenger. The throw was a combination of strength and technique that even Adam struggled to get near again. Even Tim Neild (2012 World Champion) fell short this year. Best get practicing for next year – it’s going to take something special to take the Championship title off Adam.
Ladies – Rebecca Locks
Another perfect example that technique is far more important than brute force. Rebecca narrowly missed becoming the ladies champion on her first throw. She then repeatedly made the distance but time after time, the welly just fell outside the marked throwing area. It was her very last throw that saw her edge into the lead by mere inches.
Girls (u14) – Bethany Casson
Bethany took a no nonsense approach and threw such a good throw that it remained unbeaten for the rest of the day. In fact, she looked somewhat surprised when she was given her £5 winnings that she had taken the top spot. Remember, that £5 can be spent on anything she likes )
Boys (u14) – Joe Mitchell
Joe was very unassuming but had a cracking technique for his size. At only 11 years old he managed to sneak into the lead at the closing stages. He has a few more years to remain at the top before he has to go into the men’s competition. We reckon he has what it takes to repeat next year without doubt !
Well Done Everyone !!
Sunday 25th May – Despicable Me 2 (U)
Get ready for more Minion madness in Despicable Me 2.

Sunday 25th May – Filth + Sleepless Nights (Double Bill. 18)
Scheming Bruce Robertson, a bigoted and corrupt policeman, is in line for a promotion and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Enlisted to solve a brutal murder and threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, including Ray Lennox, Bruce sets about ensuring their ruin, right under the nose of unwitting Chief Inspector Toal. As he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control. His past is slowly catching up with him, and a missing wife, a crippling drug habit and suspicious colleagues start to take their toll on his sanity. The question is: can he keep his grip on reality long enough to disentangle himself from the filth?
French crime thriller centred on a cop who turns into a relentless fighting machine after his son is kidnapped following a drug robbery gone wrong.
A clever plot, adrenaline edged, this is brilliantly entertaining.Starts at 19:00.
Tickets available from Holmfirth Tourist Information Centre/Online/On the door.
When Justin Moorhouse found the Upperthong Village Hall Panto sing along words – and then made us sing them…..I laughed so hard I almost wet myself.
Classic night which will definitely be repeated with different comedians. Absolutely brilliant.
The newly formed Upperthong Drama Group will be presenting Snow White and The Three Dwarves (well it’s not a big stage) at the Upperthong Village Hall between 2nd & 6th April 2014.
The production written by Steve Taylor and directed by panto veteran Ken Burnett is the 1st time in many years that the village has hosted such a show. It stars a number of village characters including Rob Knight as PC Mankini and Richard Parry typecast as the village idiot.
Whilst the cast has now been assembled, the group welcome any offers of help as there are obviously a number of behind the scenes jobs to do during the week. If you wish to help, please come along to a rehearsal on Monday or Wednesday evening at the hall from 7.30pm
Tickets (£6 Adults / £4 concessions) will be on sale shortly from The Royal Oak Upperthong or through Wendy Taylor (01484 682500).
We hope you will come along, bring all the family and enjoy the show
Events kind of overtook us for a while back there to be honest. The good news is that the Wine Tasting Event sold out before we even had a chance to advertise it on the web site or around the village.
The even better news is that we’ll be looking to have another go next year. And looking more short term, we’re now looking at putting on a Whiskey tasting evening. Hopefully, more to follow before those tickets all sell out !!!!
Here are a few pics….
There would have been more pictures. But Rob was awesome, the wine was excellent, the company was lovely and time just flew by. Everyone that this writer spoke to said what a fantastic evening it had been. Can’t wait for the next one….
